Could improving your workspace improve your workforce? That is the subject under debate thanks to a recent survey by property developer DeVono, which revealed that nearly one in three London-based employees (65 per cent) would be more engaged in their roles if their office was better.

This proportion of respondents said that they would work overtime and improve their performance if they could do so in a more pleasant and comfortable environment.

The report entitled Working in London 2012, also suggested that office improvements would not only create a happier and more productive workforce, but could also potentially attract talent to the company.

DeVono co-director Adam Landau commented: "Business bosses are quickly realising that by offering the best working environments they are likely to gain better performances from existing staff and also attract the best candidates during a recruitment process."

He went on to note that the capital can be a particularly stressful place to work. As a result, nearly half of those surveyed (49.2 per cent) said that the biggest perk an employer could offer them at work would be access to a gym.

"Working in London is so fast-paced and people need a greater work/life balance, which is why gyms in the workplace are such an incentive," Mr Landau noted.

Indeed, the office study revealed a number of other workplace perks that could potentially boost health and fitness.

Many respondents said that they would be happy if their company offered shower and changing facilities and bike storage areas, and 47.5 per cent said that this would make them more likely to bike to work.

When it comes to being physically comfortable in the workplace, the area that most respondents cited as the biggest factor was that of the office temperature.

It comes after a study by the Flexible Working Commission called for all employees to have the right to request flexible working conditions, whether that means working different hours or from a remote location such as at home.
