What is expected from the food industry this year?
2018 brought in trends such as alcohol free drinks, plant based proteins, African food and food that was good for your gut, but what does the food industry have in store for 2019?
These are the up and coming food trends that are believed to becoming mainstream in 2019.
The food trends predicted for 2019
The vegan movement started with a bang this year, with 14,000 people signing up to Veganuary on 30th December alone. Depending on peoples’ experiences with their vegan diet, there could be an uptake in people adopting a vegan lifestyle throughout the year.
A report from Nisbets showed that 25% of diners surveyed were having vegan, or vegetarian, options to meet the needs of customers looking for an alternative to meat.
For those not changing their diet, goat meat is looking to be introduced into supermarkets in 2019. It is estimated that almost 100,000 male goats are culled in the UK every year because they can’t be used to produce milk or cheese. Goat meat is set to be promoted within the mainstream market with supermarkets already looking at introducing new recipes on their shelves.
Goat curry has been a traditional dish throughout Southeast Asia, India and the Caribbean but goat meat has never really made its way over to Europe, however goat is thought to have a similar taste to lamb, and can be used in a variety of dishes.
Adding more natural colours to your dishes has been found to make your meal more enjoyable, but also more healthy. Foods that have strong natural colours are also usually richer in antioxidants, such as blueberries, spinach and beetroots.
Dishes such as stir fries are a great way of introducing these ingredients into your diet so why not use spring onions, carrots, red or yellow peppers or kale.
Brightly coloured foods also have a strong share value on social media platforms, with purple sweet potato trending on Instagram after people shared mash, dips and ice cream, all made with purple sweet potato. Using colourful foods will give you a fantastic advantage when marketing your food.
Mixing your takeaway
In Asda’s Good Living Magazine, they revealed a trend in making new dishes by mixing takeaways together, such as the ‘Chindian’, a blend of Chinese and Indian takeaway dishes.
Other blended dishes have included Southern Fried Duck, an oriental take on fried chicken, and dessert pizzas, where traditional pizza toppings have been replaced by chocolate and marshmallows.
Baba G’s was recently featured on BBC Two’s My Million Pound Menu, where the street food eatery blended traditional Indian cuisine with American style burgers, and were awarded £350,000 to start up their restaurant.
