Key dates to help you plan your 2022 marketing activity
As 2021 is coming to an end now, COVID-19 is still present and has changed the shopping habits of customers. Throughout the pandemic, more emphasis was placed on online shopping because of the ‘stay at home’ and COVID shielding rules. However devastating 2020 was for retail stores in the UK, 2021 gave some hope of recovery as lockdown restrictions eased during the key trading period of summer.
Hopefully, 2022 should provide retailers with more opportunities to boost sales on the high street or online. Therefore, in this year’s retail calendar we have managed to compile a list of important dates including national celebratory days, annual events, key holidays, and other major events which you can celebrate to help boost your sales.
This retail calendar provides lots of ideas and suggestions to aid in planning relevant campaigns throughout 2022 in order for your business to stand out and make the most of seasonal events.

A month-long campaign to help people lead a healthier lifestyle by encouraging them to give up alcohol throughout the month. This can be a suitable time for retailers to run awareness campaigns on social media and in-store for passing customers. You can use these campaigns to highlight your brand values perhaps
This is an annual challenge for January which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of a vegan diet. The campaign is growing in popularity year on year, so it is a terrific opportunity to get involved on social media. Pubs, restaurants, bakeries can run exclusive offers on vegan dishes, while other retail stores can promote their practices to be vegan friendly.
Shortbread day - 6th Janaury 2022
A Scottish delicacy that is enjoyed all over the world. This day can be used to promote DIY shortbread kits by bakeries, while other hospitality venues can promote special ‘shortcake based’ desserts on their menus.
Brew/Blue Monday - 18th Janaury 2022
Known as the most depressing day of the year. However, there is a campaign by the Samaritans to change it to Brew Monday so people can make the effort to have a brew and have a chat. Retailers can run interactive social media campaigns to have a virtual brew and chat with their customers or it could even be adapted for face-to-face catchups with your customers.
Burns Night - 25th January 2022
Celebrate the life and poetry of famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns, also known as Rabbie Burns. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the best of Scottish culture cuisine and tradition. As a hotel, pub, or restaurant you could host a Burns Night celebration and special menu. As a retailer, you could use the event as an opportunity to display your best Scottish produce.
Tax Return - 31st January 2022
Remember to get your tax returns for 2020-21 by midnight tonight.
LGBT+ history month
The month of February is celebrated as LGBT+ history month in the UK, and you could use this to run month-long social media campaigns to highlight how your business supports the LGBT+ community. Why not ask your staff or customers to share their stories and experiences?
Chinese New Year - 1st February 2022
2022 will be the Year of the Tiger. Chinese New Year is a good opportunity to decorate brick and mortar shops while running promotions on selected products or display a seasonal special traditional Chinese food/dessert menu leading up to the celebrations.
World Cancer day - 4th February 2022
This is a great chance to set up events like marathons or sporting activities or hikes to raise money for cancer charities. Look at sharing these efforts through social media or provide customers with simple ways to support charities in-store with charitable merchandise such as ribbons or badges.
Queens Platinum Jubilee - 6th February 2022
In 2022 the Queen will be completing 70 years of service. This milestone would make her the only monarch to do so in the British history. Use this day to inform your customers on social media about the Queen’s achievements during her 70 years.
Rugby 6 Nations - 5th February 2022
A sporting tournament is always a good opportunity to engage staff and customers alike. You could use the tournament as an opportunity to run promotions on sporting goods or decorate stores with six nation colours.
Valentine’s day - 14th February 2022
This day always generates large customer demand for romantic cards and gifts in the run-up. Make sure your business is prepared in suitable time with chocolates, flowers and other romantic gifts in a prominent place and make sure you carry stock for those last-minute purchases too! As a hospitality business, the day is also a great opportunity to offer a special couple night outs with set menus.
Random act of kindness - 17th February 2022
This is the perfect day to run raffles or prize draws and give out prizes and unique gifts to your customers. Additionally, you could even support a “pay it forward scheme” which a customer could donate to support another customer in need or charities as an act of kindness.
St. David’s Day/Shrove Tuesday - 1st March 2022
Coincidently St. David’s Day and Shrove Tuesday will be happening on the same day in 2022 and may provide a good opportunity to have a combined celebration. Hospitality venues can have exclusive offers on pancakes or run a special pancake day menu. You could also investigate promoting Welsh made products or run a quiz about St. David’s Day on social media
World Book Day – 3rd March 2022
This is a big day for book retailers to run promotions but more so for running social media campaigns about what their customers’ favourite book is and why, giving rise to an interactive discussion on social media.
International Women’s Day – 8th March 2022
A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This is a great opportunity to highlight to your staff and customers how your business is building an inclusive, fair, and equal workplace.
Holi Festival – 18th March 2022
This is an Indian festival of colours and happiness. This day can be used to share heartfelt happy stories on social media or simply decorate your high street store to create a happy atmosphere.
St. Patrick’s Day – 17th March 2022
The best day to have a green theme for instore decorations or simply to highlight the best of Irish produce you sell in-store.
First day of spring – 20th March 2022
Winter is fading, days are getting longer. Now is the perfect time to clear out your winter stock and promote your spring collection of products to get ready for the warmer and longer days ahead.
Mother's Day - 25th March 2022
