Looking after mental health at your business

The excitement of Christmas and New Year is over and some of us might start to feel a bit of a lull post festivities.

Because of this, the third Monday of January is known as Blue Monday, the saddest day of the year, but is there any truth to the idea?

What is Blue Monday?

Blue Monday is known as a pseudoscience, a practice that is thought to be based on scientific evidence, but usually holds little truth.

The trend came from 2005 when Sky Travel created a formula that measured the emotional impact of weather conditions, debt, the time elapsed since Christmas, motivation levels, and failing New Year’s resolutions. However, this formula was debunked as a marketing campaign to encourage winter travel.

Mental health charity, Mind, has busted the myth that Blue Monday is a real thing, as someone could suffer from a mental health illness at any time. One in four people are estimated to suffer from a mental health condition in the UK.

There is, however, some element of truth to low moods around Blue Monday which is usually down to a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a known mental illness.

How can you look after your mental health this January

Identifying a mental health condition

Firstly, you should identify that perhaps you are struggling with a mental health condition. The NHS website advises that you may be affected by the winter season if you find you have any of these symptoms:

  • Low mood
  • Loss of pleasure or interest in everyday activities
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness
  • Lacking energy and feeling tired during the day
  • Finding it hard to get up in the morning
  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Craving carbohydrates
  • Gaining weight

Some of these symptoms are also signs of depression, regardless of the time of year. However, some may be down to lifestyle choices, so assess these symptoms before seeing your GP.

If you feel as though you are experiencing a low mood, take the following steps to help yourself through the colder months.

  • Stay in touch: Having someone to talk to can help you when you are feeling low. This could be a friend, member of the family or even a medical professional.
  • Get active: Exercise is known to help with low mood, so start slowly with short walks, even just for 20 minutes a day, and this will help your mood.
  • Don’t bottle things up: Bottling up emotions like feeling anxious is only likely to make you feel worse. The NHS offers advice on facing your fears, which can help you with your confidence when carrying out your daily activities.
  • Avoid alcohol: Alcohol is a known depressant, so drinking to cope with depression can often have the opposite effect.
  • Eat healthier: It can be difficult to eat healthy when you are struggling with depression. Some people don’t want to eat, whilst some people find comfort in eating. Either way, you should try to keep a healthy and balanced diet if you are feeling low.
  • Keep a routine: Low mood will often lead to a change in your lifestyle, such as eating or sleeping patterns. Try to keep yourself in a routine, having your meals at a set time of day, or even setting an alarm at the weekend to keep your body in a good sleeping pattern.
